Life
Sergius was born on 3 May 1314 near Rostov to a noble family that had fallen on hard times; his baptismal name was Bartholomew. His biographer tells that he could not learn to read until a mysterious elder blessed him. After his parents’ deaths he withdrew with his brother Stefan to the forest of Radonezh, where they built cells and a small church dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
On 7 October 1337 he was tonsured a monk with the name Sergius. As others joined him the hermitage became a community; in 1354 he was ordained priest and made abbot (hegumen). The New Catholic Encyclopedia says the chapel had by then become a monastic centre, a laura, at the request of the patriarch of Constantinople.
Austere with himself and humble towards others, he refused to succeed Metropolitan Alexis as head of the Russian Church. He travelled as a peacemaker between Russian princes, and before the battle of Kulikovo in 1380 Grand Prince Dmitry Ivanovich (Donskoy) came to his monastery for a blessing; tradition says Sergius sent two monks with him and foretold the victory.
He named his disciple Nikon as his successor and died on 25 September 1392. His disciples founded many monasteries, and the Trinity monastery became one of the principal centres of Russian spiritual life.
