Reading the Atlas
Dates marked c. are approximate, and a century is given where nothing more precise is known. Labels such as Traditional,Own account or Legend say what kind of evidence lies behind a statement. No portrait is presented as a likeness where no authentic likeness survives: such entries show an initial or a later work of art, labelled as such, with its source and rights.
