Life

Bernadette was born on 7 January 1844 at the Boly Mill in Lourdes, the first child of François Soubirous and Louise Casterot. When the mill failed in 1854 the family fell into poverty and by 1857 lived in a single room known as the Cachot, a former prison; she spent time as a shepherdess at Bartrès.

On 11 February 1858, gathering firewood at the grotto of Massabielle, she reported seeing a Lady; there were eighteen apparitions in all, the last on 16 July. On 25 February, by her account, the Lady told her to drink from a spring, and she dug and found a little muddy water; on 25 March the Lady gave her name in the local dialect: “Que soy era immaculada councepciou” (“I am the Immaculate Conception”).

In 1860 she was taken in, as “a sick poor person”, at the hospice run by the Sisters of Nevers, where she learned to read and write. In 1866 she left Lourdes for their mother house at Nevers, where she made her profession in 1867 as Sister Marie-Bernard. Often ill, she said, “I came here to hide myself.”

She died at Nevers on 16 April 1879, aged 35. The sanctuary stresses that she was canonised not for having seen the apparitions but for the way she responded to them.

Tradition

Bishop Laurence of Tarbes set up a commission of enquiry in July 1858 and on 18 January 1862 declared that the apparitions bore “all the characteristics of the truth” and that the faithful were justified in believing them. The sanctuary at the grotto grew from this.

The source workbook lists these under “Confirmed Miracle / Key Event”. The Atlas does not treat them as confirmed: each is labelled by the kind of evidence behind it.

“Discovery of miraculous healing spring at Lourdes gushing muddy soil (1858)”

Her own account, as kept by the sanctuary: told to drink from the spring, she found only a little muddy water and could drink at the fourth try. The spring’s origin is her report; healings attributed to it are judged case by case by the Church.
