Cross form

Cross of Avis

Also: cruz de Avis

Form

A green cross fleury, shown in the cited equal-armed reference form with the gold edge specified for the modern Portuguese insignia.

When it is documented

The sign of the Portuguese Military Order of Avis; see the order’s entry for dates.

Context

Still used for the Portuguese honorific Military Order of Avis. The new drawing follows an equal-armed reference; the former Atlas drawing’s elongated proportions are not treated as a fixed rule.
